Vladimir is an administrative center of the Vladimir region, which population extends back a bit over 350 thousand persons.
The Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod highway passes through Vladimir. Also, several production enterprises function in the city.
Vladimir is the city with a centuries-long history. So there are a large number of architectural monuments in it. Unique monuments of white stone premongolian architecture (White Monuments) are most popular among the tourists from all corners of the world; all of these monuments are protected by the UNESCO world organization.
In 1158-1160, during the grand duke Andrey Bogolyubsky’s rule, Assumption Cathedral was built in Vladimir. Today it is probably the main sight of the city. The cathedral has been painted by icon painters Andrei Rublyov and Daniil Chyorny. Their unique frescoes have survived till now.
The Golden Gate (1164), tower over the main gate of the city, also was constructed at the time of Prince Andrey Bogolyubsky. They served as a front gate into the city and together with four other not remained gates fulfilled a defensive function. There was also the Church of Deposition of the Robe in them. Today the military and historical museum is situated within its walls.
Cathedral of St. Demetrius (1194-97) was built as a private chapel of Vsevolod the Big Nest. Images of Christianity, mythology and plots of medieval literature get on together in a white stone carving of the cathedral. Besides, there is "The Last Judgment", a fresco of the 12th century, in the cathedral.
Many cozy squares and public parks of Vladimir are the favorite rest area of citizens. One of them is the Central park of the city. It was founded in 1958 and initially had the name of Park of the 850 anniversary of Vladimir. Among locals, it is known as "Vosmisotka".
